Magic

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Last week I had the privilege of giving the invocation at a meeting of the Orlando City Commission. I took the opportunity to thank God for the Orlando Magic, our very successful NBA basketball team. I would never pray for victory. While I appreciate it when athletes thank God after a win, the truth is there are probably good, praying people pulling for both teams. But I did thank God publicly last week for the unity the Magic build in our community. They give us inspiration, and they bring us together. It is amazing how young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, no matter what race or ethnicity, etc. — we all sense a kinship in pulling together for our Magic. And that is something for which to be thankful — win or lose!

Rain

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Thank God for the rain!  Scripture makes it clear that God sends the rain — Job 5:10, et al.  We have certainly needed rain here in Central Florida.  Humanly speaking, we might wish that our rain shortfall did not catch up all at once!  But clearly we should be thankful.  We need the rain.

Memorial Day

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

We are glad to honor the men and women who have given their lives for our nation. It is the least we can do. We would not be who we are or have what we have were it not for the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. In the Old Testament, Jacob set up Bethel as a memorial of the special occasion when he met the Lord anew and afresh. In the New Testament Jesus commemorated the Lord’s Supper basically as a memorial for the occasion of his sacrificial death for our salvation.

This weekend we remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. Scripture says there is no greater love than to lay down your life for another. We salute them!
