Christian author Don Cousins has written a remarkably accurate book entitled, “Experiencing Leader Shift.” My son (Dan), who is a pastor, gave me the book, and I read it on vacation this summer. Cousins has worked closely with Bill Hybels in the past and has a wealth of knowledge and experience concerning leadership.
I believe his book is very much on target. He describes how many pastors struggle by trying to fulfill a leadership gift that may not be theirs — instead of allowing God to use them through the gifts and strengths He has given them. I believe Cousins is right.
Far too many people focus in church circles on the idea that everything rises or falls on leadership. Basically, that is true. But a pastor, who is gifted in the pulpit, does not have to exercise administrative leadership himself in order to be successful. However, to succeed, it is important that he have assistants or “laymen” who fulfill that administrative leadership role — but who are loyal to the pastor. Otherwise, there will be lack of harmony.
The pastor cannot do everything. But anything with two heads is a monstrosity. So, additional leadership roles in a church are necessary, but followship is vital. Those in subordinate leadership must be loyal and faithful to the pastor. This is biblical — Hebrews 13:17. And the Bible also says, “Can two walk together except they be agreed?”
There needs to be followship and harmony in order to make leadership successful. And an organization cannot go forward without leadership and harmony. I believe Cousins’ book is brilliant. I highly recommend it.
