Leadership

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Christian author Don Cousins has written a remarkably accurate book entitled, “Experiencing Leader Shift.” My son (Dan), who is a pastor, gave me the book, and I read it on vacation this summer. Cousins has worked closely with Bill Hybels in the past and has a wealth of knowledge and experience concerning leadership.

I believe his book is very much on target. He describes how many pastors struggle by trying to fulfill a leadership gift that may not be theirs — instead of allowing God to use them through the gifts and strengths He has given them. I believe Cousins is right.

Far too many people focus in church circles on the idea that everything rises or falls on leadership. Basically, that is true. But a pastor, who is gifted in the pulpit, does not have to exercise administrative leadership himself in order to be successful. However, to succeed, it is important that he have assistants or “laymen” who fulfill that administrative leadership role — but who are loyal to the pastor.  Otherwise, there will be lack of harmony.

The pastor cannot do everything. But anything with two heads is a monstrosity. So, additional leadership roles in a church are necessary, but followship is vital. Those in subordinate leadership must be loyal and faithful to the pastor. This is biblical — Hebrews 13:17. And the Bible also says, “Can two walk together except they be agreed?”

There needs to be followship and harmony in order to make leadership successful. And an organization cannot go forward without leadership and harmony.  I believe Cousins’ book is brilliant. I highly recommend it.

Church on Vacation

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

For many years my family and I have enjoyed visiting other churches on vacation. My son, who is now a pastor, reminded me this week of the enjoyable memories he has of visiting various churches on vacation. Now, with him in the ministry, and another son-in-law in the ministry, we have visited both of their churches this year while traveling. We also visited First Baptist of New Smyrna Beach, whose new pastor is a friend of mine.

My wife and I do not feel duty-bound to go to church on vacation. We enjoy it. We do not take a vacation from worshipping God. And we like to see how others are ministering and pick up new ideas from their churches.

Overall, for us, visiting other churches on vacation is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. And it fulfills Hebrews 10:25, as well!

Persistence in Prayer

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Jesus makes it clear in the Gospels that we should be persistent in prayer. My guess is that far too often we give up — or grow weary — of praying, perhaps when God is just about to answer. James tells us, “You have not, because you ask not.” Then Jesus uses two parables to accentuate persistence in the matter of prayer. He tells of the man who has a late night visitor and pesters his neighbor for food to set before his visitor. “Lend me three loaves!” he persistently asks. Finally, the neighbor gives in — not because of his own kindness, but because he is being worn out by the frequent requests. A similar story is told of the unjust judge who finally gives in to help a widow lady — not because it is the right thing to do, but because he is tired of the constant requests coming from the widow. In other words, she is making a nuisance of herself.

God is not unjust. But he uses these illustrations to show us how He will answer our prayers — if we will keep at it, if we will be persistent in coming to Him.

We need to pray and keep praying. The Bible says to keep seeking, keep knocking on the door, keep asking. After all, such persistence is evidence of true faith. We are expecting God to answer!

July

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

July has been a great family month for my wife and me. We have spent time with our two daughters and three of our grandchildren already. Later this month we will visit our son and our three other grandsons in Ohio.

Evangelist Jim Wilson did a marvelous job of preaching for us at Delaney Street last Sunday in my absence. This Sunday I will be preaching on “Mercy — The Woman Taken in Adultery” from John 8.

Our church attendance and giving is up this summer, over last summer, for which we thank the Lord!
