Football

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

A sports columnist for a Fort Myers newspaper recently criticized Tim Tebow, in particular, and all evangelical athletes, in general, for their efforts to glorify God and give testimony about God in the sports realm. He wrote that he doesn’t care if he ever again hears another athlete publicly thank God!

I have never met Tim Tebow, but I have been particularly impressed with his public testimony on behalf of his faith — a faith which I obviously share. I have never known Tim to pray for a victory, or to give God credit for giving the Gators a victory. He does give God credit for enabling him to perform and blessing his team as they give their best effort. Many athletes do that, and I applaud them for making that effort.

All of us should strive to give testimony and bring glory to God in whatever venue God places us. And I have no problem with people of other faiths doing the same thing. I believe the Gospel will hold its own under scrutiny, along side any other faith.

For years, the Muslim faith has found an outward expression through sports in America. Many of us remember when the boxer, Cassius Clay, changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and we remember when the basketball star, Lew Alcindor, changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I do not recall much outcry against their right to do so. Nor is there any reason to fret over evangelical Christians expressing themselves in the world in which they live.

Welcome, Jon Woods!

Monday, October 19th, 2009

On Sunday, our church voted by 222 to 6 (a 97% vote!) to extend a call to Rev. Jonathan Woods to become our new Minister of Music & Seniors. Bro. Jon publicly and immediately accepted our call!

I am excited about Jon joining our ministry team!  I believe he is going to fit in well in our ministry. His last Sunday at his current church, Crestview Baptist Church in Lakeland, will be November 1. He will begin his ministry here at Delaney Street Baptist Church on Sunday, November 8.

We welcome Jon, his wife, Diane, and their three sons — Nikko, Colton, and Tucker — to Delaney Street!

Besides Crestview Baptist in Lakeland, Jon has served at First Baptist Church of Apopka, FL, and also at SBC churches in Illinois. He is 42. He has earned a B.A. in business at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and an MBA at the University of Tampa, FL. He is currently a Master of Music candidate at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.

Gates of Hell

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Jesus said, “I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Such words give an assumption — that the church is on the march, actively moving against the “gates of hell.” One would sit and protect the gates to one’s residence. In Christ’s description, the gates belong to the enemy. That means the church should be advancing against the forces of darkness.

In recent years I have actually heard preachers express the concern that the church can no longer effectively reach our modern culture. I have heard the concern that our secularized society has become too antagonistic to the gospel to be reached in large numbers, and that the best the church today can do is to “maintain” an effective witness, without necessarily seeing good results.

I do not buy that argument at all! I could not disagree more. These are great days to be alive and serving the Lord Jesus Christ. Hearts are as hungry and spiritually needy today as ever. There is a young generation seeking truth — and there always has been. The gospel is as powerful and effective today as it has ever been. The Word of God is also as real today — Isaiah 40:8 — and as effective today — Hebrews 4:12 — as ever.

God can change lives and turn this generation to Himself, if believers will be faithful to Him and to His truth — Acts 26:18. I believe we are seeing evidence of this in the many churches which are staying true to the Word of God and which are growing in our current generation!

It’s Not About Me!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

This fall we are walking through the New Testament book of Philippians on Sunday mornings. The Apostle Paul seems to send a message throughout this book, “It’s not about me!”  That theme runs contrary to our modern culture, which is very self-centered.  Writing from prison, Paul has much to say to us!
The Bible makes it clear that each of us should always strive to follow the example of Christ, the Son of God, who humbled Himself — always putting the will of God and others first.  How much more so should we be willing to humble ourselves!

We will continue this Sunday with the 4th message in this series — “True Humility,” from Philippians 2:1-11. This series of messages should take us right up to Thanksgiving.

Last Sunday

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Last Sunday I had the privilege of preaching in the Knoxville, TN, area. I love to preach. I am not away from my own pulpit very often. Here at Delaney Street Baptist Church I invited Dr. Robert Mounts to fill the pulpit in my absence. Our church had a great service. It was wonderful to have Dr. Mounts back here. He was a predecessor of mine, serving this church during the 1980s. After he stepped down here, he went on to become an official with the Florida Baptist Convention. He is a great man of God.
