New Year

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

As we look to the new year, I am reminded of the statement made by the legendary Baptist missionary Adoniram Judson. In his early years he struggled terribly in Burma. He buried his wife and daughter and had zero converts to the Christian faith in his first seven years in Burma. A critic asked Judson, at that point, what did he now think of the potential for the conversion of the heathen to Christ. His reponse is famous. Said he, “The future is as bright as the promises of God.”

Judson went on to see such success as a missionary that books are written about him and colleges are named after him today.

The future is just as bright for each of us today as we face the new year and the new decade of 2010. The same God who blessed and used Adoniram Judson in Burma in the 1800s is as alive today in America in the 21st century. And he loves each of us just as much as he did Judson.

So, launch out in faith in this new year and trust the Lord to do something special in your life in 2010! In the Christmas story, which we have just celebrated this month, the angel said to Mary, “For with God nothing shall be impossible!”

Urban Meyer

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I do not know anything about Urban Meyer other than what I read in the newspapers and hear on TV and radio. I cannot help but admire his success as head coach of the Florida Gator college football team. I watched with great interest this week as he announced he was stepping down as head coach on Saturday — due to health and family, and then changed his direction to a temporary “leave of absence” on Sunday.

I wish him the best. I admire a man who will cite faith, family and health as issues more important than career, job, and success. I will pray for him. Hopefully he can find the balance to maintain his family and faith priorities and continue to succeed as a college football coach.  Working with young men as a coach is an honorable and worthy task.

Everyone knows he is an outstanding coach.  I admire the fact that he wants also to be an outstanding husband and father. God bless him!

Christmas Eve

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

We will be celebrating our annual Christmas Eve Candlelight service on Thursday, December 24, at 6:00 PM — a one-hour service. Our focus that night will be on the biblical story of the wise men, who came from the east to honor the Lord Jesus Christ after his birth.

Our “Walk Through Bethlehem” was a marvelous success. After getting rained out one night, we carried it over an extra day. Some 900 people came through our “Walk Through Bethlehem” to celebrate the true meaning of the Christmas season. I have received numerous compliments from visitors. Our team of workers did an outstanding job in presenting this ministry. We appreciate the leadership of our director, Larry Hollister.

This Sunday, December 20, I will be preaching on “Peace on Earth” in the morning, and we will look at Joseph in the evening — I am calling it, “Jesus’ Dad Hears from Jesus’ Father.”

We are also planning a New Year’s Eve Candlelight Communion service on Thursday, December 31, at 6:00 PM — again, a one-hour service. There will be no regular midweek service on Wednesdays, December 23 and 30. There will be no regular Sunday evening service on Sundays, December 27 and January 3.

We hope that everyone has a happy holiday season! Our focus is on Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We also wish our Jewish friends a Happy Hanukkah! It is noteworthy that Jesus celebrated Hanukkah, which was then called the Feast of Dedication, as recorded in the Gospel of John, chapter 10.

Our Christmas Children’s Program

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Our children’s Christmas program last Sunday night was outstanding. We never grow tired of watching our children and grandchildren minister at this time of the year. What a joy to watch and listen as the children sing the songs of the Christmas season.

I want to thank our workers — Denise & Craig Brown, Renee Britton, Robin Chapman, Debbie Jones, Lisa Leatherwood, Jennifer McDaniel, Ruth Moore, Gail Pyle, and Pam Thompson. Where would we be without the faithfulness of such individuals in working with our children?

Our theme was “The Promise of a King.” We celebrate the coming of the King, the Lord Jesus Christ, into our world!

Walk Through Bethlehem

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Our church is sponsoring the 10th annual “Walk Through Bethlehem” this week — December 10 through 13. Our Walk Through Bethlehem includes live actors and live animals. Walk back in time with us to experience firsthand the miraculous night when our Savior was born. This is an event which highlights the true meaning of Christmas.

Our Walk Through Bethlehem is set up on our church property at the corner of Delaney and Kaley avenues in Orlando. There is free admission, with refreshments provided. The wait is usually not long, and the entire “Walk Through” takes about half an hour.

Our Walk Through B ethlehem is scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, December 10, 11, and 12, from 6 to 8 PM. Our final night’s performance will be Sunday, December 13, from 5 to 8 PM. You are welcome to join us!
