Outreach

What a great week we have had here at Delaney Street!

The evangelistic response at Vacation Bible School surprised even me, as we saw 48 children come forward publicly to accept Christ as Savior. The evangelistic service peaked on Friday with a response of 21 kids. We thank the Lord for what He is doing in the hearts of the children.

Then on Sunday we celebrated the one-year anniversary of our Spanish Mission, Iglesia Bautista la Rocha. The Spanish service alone had 230 people, pushing our total attendance to nearly 600 on Sunday. Our mission, under the leadership of Dr. Fernando Abella, our Spanish pastor, has baptized nearly 20 people over the past year. Among those baptized were an 80-year-old man and a young man who had been studying for the priesthood!

We thank God for what He is doing here at Delaney Street!

Vacation Bible School

Monday, June 21st, 2010

This is the week of the year which we dedicate to our children. Our Vacation Bible School for children is this week here at Delaney Street Baptist Church. We are using the Southern Baptist program, “Saddle Ridge Ranch,” to minister to our children.

Already we had two boys publicly accept Christ as their Savior today. We have an evangelistic message each day. We teach the Word of God to our children. We have fun, crafts & recreation as well.

VBS is for children ages 4 through 6th grade. We run daily from 9 AM to 12:00 noon this week through Friday, June 21 to 25. Anyone is welcome!

Welcome to Orlando, Southern Baptists!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

We sure got off to a great start, hosting the national meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention this week. It was my privilege to serve as the Team Leader for the Greater Orlando Baptist Association for the Kindness Explosion, one of a dozen major outreach events for Crossover Orlando 2010. We had a great time, with wonderful results on Saturday.

Then the Pastors’ Conference on Sunday and Monday has been extraordinary. We are hearing tremendous, Bible-based messages from some of America’s best preachers.  All of this continues through Wednesday at the Orange County Convention Center.

And it is hot, sunny, and gorgeous at this time of the year in Florida! Everyone loves Orlando!

Welcome to Orlando

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

We welcome thousands of Southern Baptists to Orlando this week — with our Crossover Orlando 2010 events, followed by the Pastors’ Conference and the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.

For those of us who are a part of the Greater Orlando Baptist Association, we have been planning for a full year. It seems hard to believe this week has arrived. We believe we have the best Baptist association director in America in Bill Faulkner. Under his leadership, we have had a great team put everything together.

Now we are trusting God to bless all of our efforts. We especially look forward to some great speakers like pastors Ken Whitten and Andy Stanley in this coming week!

John Wooden

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

John Wooden, the legendary UCLA college basketball coach, died this weekend at the remarkable age of 99. I remember vividly the great Bruin basketball teams Wooden coached during the 1960s and 1970s. His teams won 88 games, 12 national NCAA basketball championships, went undefeated four times, etc.  In college he coached such eminent basketball stars as Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar), Gail Goodrich, and Bill Walton.

But what was also special to me about Coach Wooden was his faith. For years after his retirement from active coaching, he wrote books and taught seminars about success in life — including faith.

Wooden was married to one woman — his wife Nell, who died of cancer in 1985. They were both from Indiana, where they met and married. Years ago in mourning her death, Wooden was comforted by his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a Christian for many years, and he treasured his faith above basketball. “I have always tried to make it clear that basketball is not the ultimate,” Coach Wooden once said. “It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live. There is only one kind of life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior.” Wooden’s faith strongly influenced his life and career as a legendary basketball coach. He read the Bible daily and was faithful in church. He said that he hoped his faith was apparent to others. Said Wooden, “If I were ever prosecuted for my religion, I truly hope there would be enough evidence to convict me.”
