Reaching Out During the Christmas Season

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Christmas is an important time of the year for believers to reach out to the community around us with the love of Christ. God the Father certainly expressed his love by sending His Son to us at Christmas (John 3:16), and Jesus certainly expressed His love by coming into this world through the miracle of the virgin birth. Christmas is an act of love — I John 4:9-10.

During the Christmas season, the hearts of people seem to be a little more open spiritually and a little more tender. If someone has suffered a loss in their family, that loss seems to be felt more acutely during the holiday season. If someone is lonely, the loneliness seems to be more accentuated during the holiday season. Sometimes it feels like the whole world is happy — except that troubled heart which is suffering loss or loneliness.

This creates an ideal opportunity for the Christian community to reach out with love and compassion. At our church we strive to take a number of steps during the holiday season to reach out with the love of Christ by: giving out holiday food baskets; receiving a special offering for worldwide missions; sending shoeboxes of gifts to Haiti; holding special dinners or parties for the elderly and the homebound; presenting special Christmas programs, such as Walk Through Bethlehem and a Christmas musicale; etc.

Or it may just be a kind word or an act of generosity toward a neighbor.

Surely, as Christians we should strive to reach out with the love of God year-round. But the holiday season presents us with a special opportunity!

Walk Through Bethlehem

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

Our church here in Orlando has had an annual tradition of presenting our “Walk Through Bethlehem” each Christmas. The village of Bethlehem is set up on our property, with a half-hour tour to describe the birth and life of Christ.

Our first presentation will be Sunday evening, December 12, from 5 to 8 PM. Then we will follow with programs the evenings of December 16, 17, and 18.

It is well worth coming! Hope to see you there!

Our Christmas Children’s Program

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Our children’s Christmas program last Sunday night was outstanding. We never grow tired of watching our children and grandchildren minister at this time of the year. What a joy to watch and listen as the children sing the songs of the Christmas season.

I want to thank our workers — Denise & Craig Brown, Renee Britton, Robin Chapman, Debbie Jones, Lisa Leatherwood, Jennifer McDaniel, Ruth Moore, Gail Pyle, and Pam Thompson. Where would we be without the faithfulness of such individuals in working with our children?

Our theme was “The Promise of a King.” We celebrate the coming of the King, the Lord Jesus Christ, into our world!

Walk Through Bethlehem

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Our church is sponsoring the 10th annual “Walk Through Bethlehem” this week — December 10 through 13. Our Walk Through Bethlehem includes live actors and live animals. Walk back in time with us to experience firsthand the miraculous night when our Savior was born. This is an event which highlights the true meaning of Christmas.

Our Walk Through Bethlehem is set up on our church property at the corner of Delaney and Kaley avenues in Orlando. There is free admission, with refreshments provided. The wait is usually not long, and the entire “Walk Through” takes about half an hour.

Our Walk Through B ethlehem is scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, December 10, 11, and 12, from 6 to 8 PM. Our final night’s performance will be Sunday, December 13, from 5 to 8 PM. You are welcome to join us!
