Faith, Food & Football

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Tonight has become a big annual football focus in America. At our church we are capitalizing on this by celebrating a night of “Faith, Food & Football.” We will all meet in our gymnasium at 6:00 for our Sunday evening get-together. I am planning a short devotional message regarding the life of Bobby Bowden. Bowden, the lengendary Florida State football coach, has been a dedicated and devoted Christian for many years. Then we will judge (& eat) our men’s chili cook-off. Most of us will stay to watch the Super Bowl until half-time. Most people will go home at half-time and maybe catch the rest of the game.

Here we are in the heart of Florida. I asked the congregation this morning, how many favored the Indianapolis Colts tonight? I would say about 30 hands went up. Then I asked, how many are pulling for the New Orleans Saints? Again, about 30 hands, maybe 35, went up. Then I asked, how many don’t care? A few hundred hands went up!

But it has been refreshing to hear the Christian testimonies of players and coaches from both the Colts and the Saints this week. The Bible tells us that whatever we do, do all to the glory of God (I Corinthians 10:31)!

Urban Meyer

I do not know anything about Urban Meyer other than what I read in the newspapers and hear on TV and radio. I cannot help but admire his success as head coach of the Florida Gator college football team. I watched with great interest this week as he announced he was stepping down as head coach on Saturday — due to health and family, and then changed his direction to a temporary “leave of absence” on Sunday.

I wish him the best. I admire a man who will cite faith, family and health as issues more important than career, job, and success. I will pray for him. Hopefully he can find the balance to maintain his family and faith priorities and continue to succeed as a college football coach.  Working with young men as a coach is an honorable and worthy task.

Everyone knows he is an outstanding coach.  I admire the fact that he wants also to be an outstanding husband and father. God bless him!

Football

A sports columnist for a Fort Myers newspaper recently criticized Tim Tebow, in particular, and all evangelical athletes, in general, for their efforts to glorify God and give testimony about God in the sports realm. He wrote that he doesn’t care if he ever again hears another athlete publicly thank God!

I have never met Tim Tebow, but I have been particularly impressed with his public testimony on behalf of his faith — a faith which I obviously share. I have never known Tim to pray for a victory, or to give God credit for giving the Gators a victory. He does give God credit for enabling him to perform and blessing his team as they give their best effort. Many athletes do that, and I applaud them for making that effort.

All of us should strive to give testimony and bring glory to God in whatever venue God places us. And I have no problem with people of other faiths doing the same thing. I believe the Gospel will hold its own under scrutiny, along side any other faith.

For years, the Muslim faith has found an outward expression through sports in America. Many of us remember when the boxer, Cassius Clay, changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and we remember when the basketball star, Lew Alcindor, changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I do not recall much outcry against their right to do so. Nor is there any reason to fret over evangelical Christians expressing themselves in the world in which they live.
