Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

On Sunday, May 30, we will celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. We have a very special morning worship service planned here at Delaney Street. We look forward to honoring our military — especially those who have sacrificed for our country with the loss of their lives. We salute them this week!

Men and women who have served our nation have given their lives for our freedom. We need to honor their sacrifice by striving to use our freedom as a blessing to others and in service to God.

As Nehemiah prayed for his nation in Nehemiah, chapter 1, we need to pray for our nation. We should pray that our country will be swept with a great turning to righteousness and honoring God in every way possible.

Football

A sports columnist for a Fort Myers newspaper recently criticized Tim Tebow, in particular, and all evangelical athletes, in general, for their efforts to glorify God and give testimony about God in the sports realm. He wrote that he doesn’t care if he ever again hears another athlete publicly thank God!

I have never met Tim Tebow, but I have been particularly impressed with his public testimony on behalf of his faith — a faith which I obviously share. I have never known Tim to pray for a victory, or to give God credit for giving the Gators a victory. He does give God credit for enabling him to perform and blessing his team as they give their best effort. Many athletes do that, and I applaud them for making that effort.

All of us should strive to give testimony and bring glory to God in whatever venue God places us. And I have no problem with people of other faiths doing the same thing. I believe the Gospel will hold its own under scrutiny, along side any other faith.

For years, the Muslim faith has found an outward expression through sports in America. Many of us remember when the boxer, Cassius Clay, changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and we remember when the basketball star, Lew Alcindor, changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I do not recall much outcry against their right to do so. Nor is there any reason to fret over evangelical Christians expressing themselves in the world in which they live.

Answered Prayer

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Very few things warm the heart of a Christian as does answered prayer. When God answers our prayers, it shows that He is intimately involved in our lives, that He hears us, and that He cares. The Bible certainly teaches that He has the power to answer our prayers. Jesus said, “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it!”

I am inspired over and over again in prayer when I read missionary stories. Lately I have been reading about J. Hudson Taylor, the pioneer missionary into China, and about Lee King, one of the first missionaries on the Carribbean island of Cayman Brac. What answers to pray these men saw!

There is no reason we cannot see similar answers to prayer. My heart was thrilled last week when our church staff saw a definite answer to prayer one day after we discussed a need. Similarly, my wife and I saw a definite answer to prayer this week.

We serve a great God. The Bible says, “You have not, because you ask not.” As the old song says, we need to take everything to God in prayer!
