Focus on Missions

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

We have just completed our statewide home missions emphasis with our Maguire State Missions offering here at Delaney Street Baptist Church. In October we will have a foreign missions emphasis, as we have the opportunity to have two outstanding international speakers.

Sunday evening, October 9, at 6:00 we will hear Saul Paul Kes, an IMB missionary from Thailand. A former devout Buddhist, Brother Kes’ testimony is fascinating!

The weekend of October 22-23, our speaker will be Dr. Abraham Thomas, a college president and missionary statesman from south India. Dr. Thomas will speak at our men’s breakfast on Saturday, October 22, at 8:00, then in both our morning and evening Sunday services on October 23. International evangelist Larry McFadden told me that Dr. Thomas is the outstanding national Christian leader he has worked with anywhere in the world. Having worked with Abraham Thomas extensively myself, I would concur!

So, we look forward to a great missions emphasis for the month of October!

Summer Reading

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

With summer vacation coming to an end, I look back on some outstanding reading this summer.  I am currently finishing a book entitled, “Look Me in the Eyes – My Life with Asperger’s,”  by John Elder Robison.  It is an outstanding book on Asperger’s from the view of someone with Asperger’s.  Excellent book!

I love to read biographies, and I love to read about missions.  This summer I read biographies of Amelia Earhart, Harry Greene of Good News Prison Ministry, missionary John Hyde, missionary Amy Carmichael, Nazarene evangelist Bud Robinson, missionary Hudson Taylor, and missionary and BSF founder Wetherell Johnson.  I also read an outstanding book by Jewell Johnson entitled, “The Top 100 Women of the Christian Faith.”  And I read a couple of historical books on the Kennedys.

Also, I read Ken Hemphill’s “Bonzai Theory of Church Growth,” Jacob Gartenhaus’ book on witnessing for Christ, and a book on missions in Ecuador by Bruce Porterfield.

Prayer for Missions

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

We are strongly motivated to pray for missions this summer. Our church has people literally scattered all over the world serving God on the foreign mission field. We believe in missions here at Delaney Street Baptist Church. It is rewarding to see our commitment to missions growing.

a. Already this year I spent two weeks in India preaching and teaching the Word of God;

b. We have a young lady from our church, Stephanie Lemon, on a two-year mission trip to Southeast Asia;

c. This week we have a team of 9 young people, led by our youth pastor, Rev. Curt Amlong, in Ecuador on a 10-day mission; and,

d. Our music pastor, Rev. Jon Woods, will be taking a four-person team to Haiti at the end of the this month.

So, we are praying for them! The Apostle Paul challenges us to pray for missions — Ephesians 6:18-20.

Larry McFadden

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Tonight I will speak at the annual banquet of Evangelist Larry McFadden at First Baptist Orlando. Larry is a dear friend of ours. He has ministered here at our church numerous times. I had the privilege of traveling and speaking with him last January on a two-week mission to India.

God has opened some extraordinary doors overseas for Brother Larry’s ministry. He is getting into a number of countries where he trains national pastors and leaders and teaches the Word of God to numerous church leaders.

He is a man of God. It is a delight to be able to minister with him. Through Larry’s ministry, God has opened the door for me to return to India on a regular basis. All religions and the freedom to preach the gospel are legal in India, but India is a predominantly Hindu nation — a nation of 1-billion people where less than 1% adhere to the Christian faith. As Christians, we need to pray for India!

Abraham Thomas

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Wow, what a great missions service we had on May 16! Dr. Abraham Thomas from Trivandrum, India, was outstanding. I cannot remember when I have been in a better service focusing upon foreign missions!  Jesus said, “The fields are white already unto harvest!”

I was so pleased with how warmly our church received Dr. Thomas. As I took him to the airport on Tuesday, we rejoiced over what a great visit he had here in Orlando. Dr. Thomas hosted me in India in January. I was so glad we could return the favor. His love offering was the best I have seen here at our church. He deserved it!

Dr. Thomas certainly stirred our hearts with the opportunity to partner with him in his outstanding ministry in India. His ministry has started and supports 185 churches throughout India, plus 16 children’s homes, and a college of approximately 150 students at Logos School of Theology. Spiritually India is a needy country. With a strong Hindu population, it is known as the “land of 300 million gods.” The born-again Christian population is no more than 1 % out of an overall population of 1.2-billion people. There is much work to do to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank God for men like Abraham Thomas, who was born and raised in India. We are thankful to be able to support his effort!
